CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday night had a light agenda, compared to recent past controversies over Rock the South (RTS) and rezoning.  The council did hear brief reports from Cullman Fire Rescue Chief Brian Bradberry, Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper, and RTS promoter Nathan Baugh, who all attended the meeting.

Bradberry noted that this past weekend’s RTS produced a lower number of medical emergencies than the previous year.

Culpepper reported that 152 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies worked at RTS, and told the council, “It was a learning experience on the outside.  We had to make some adjustments on the traffic.  We had the traffic issues, but we made adjustments and worked that out.”

He said officials rated crowd behavior a “solid B,” and said, “It was the biggest crowd we ever had, and one of the best behaved.”

Baugh praised the local agencies that worked with RTS to put on the event.

The council approved a special event request from Derrick Barton of Jack Aces Garage to hold a Car and Bike Show on Aug. 10 from 2-10 p.m. in a portion of the Special Events District including Depot Park, Festhalle, Arnold Street Northeast and First Avenue Northeast, to benefit the Cullman Police Department’s Shop with a Cop charitable Christmas program.

The council suspended rules of order to pass two ordinances to surplus and sell small unused parcels of city property:

  • Lot 673 located on Ninth Street Southeast
  • Lots 5 and 6 of Terrace Heights Fourth Addition located on David Drive Northwest

The council also passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Woody Jacobs to negotiate and purchase property near Art Park in order to make improvements to the storm water drainage in that area.

The Cullman City Council normally meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. in the Cullman City Hall auditorium.  The public is invited to attend.
