HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State’s Culinary Pride Club has won the Gumbo Gala trophy for the third consecutive year.
Wallace State’s Culinary team won the best student team seafood gumbo and the overall Chef’s Choice at the 14th annual Episcopal Place Gumbo Gala held in Birmingham last weekend.
The Gumbo Gala featured more than 40 cook teams and 3,000 guests. In the Chef’s Choice category, Wallace State prevailed against professionals, backyard chefs and students.
Wallace State students competing at the event were Trent Nairemore, Debbie Phillips, Austin Salinas, Marianne Westbrook, Amanda Brown, Katrina Lintow and Krystal Harris.
“We have an absolute blast at this event each year we’ve competed. It builds camaraderie among our students and gives them a chance to relax and unwind at a fun event that’s not graded or in the classroom,” said Wallace State Culinary instructor Aaron Nichols. “It’s a great way to get out in the community and showcase our skills.”
Wallace State’s Academy of Culinary Arts students also placed well recently at the state SkillsUSA competition, winning medals in multiple categories.
