CULLMAN, Ala. –  The annual Safe Kids Expo will be this Saturday, April 13 at Sportsman Lake Park.

Blakely Hopper of Brooks’ Place Child Advocacy Center shared, “Our annual SAFE KIDS Expo is coming up on April 13, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This event is just one way we are working to support and engage our community during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Come spend a fun-filled day at the park enjoying activities, games and snacks all while learning about ways to keep kids SAFE from child abuse and neglect. We hope to see you there!”

The Expo will include inflatables, fishing, face painting, train rides, putt-putt, drinks, popcorn and snow cones. It’s free for children 12 and younger, who must be accompanied by an adult.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (www.childwelfare.gov), “National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect and promotes the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to increase awareness and provide education and support to families through resources and strategies to prevent child abuse and neglect. Each year, the White House and many states issue proclamations to raise awareness and to encourage communities to take steps to improve the wellbeing of children.”

The Cullman County Commission and mayors of Cullman County municipalities have signed proclamations recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month.

An average of one report of child abuse or neglect is made every hour in the state of Alabama, and the Alabama Department of Human Resources reported that 25 children died in Alabama last year as a result of abuse.
