ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – After going 4-0 in pool play on Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Raiders entered bracket play as the third seed Wednesday morning and got the day started with a 10-0 win over Albertville. After two scoreless innings, Good Hope blew it open in the top of the third by plating 10 runs and nearly batting through the order twice.
Jacqueline Hays got it started with an RBI single and Skylar Tucker made it a 3-0 game with a 2-run single just one pitch later. Bailey Swann singled into center field to bring Hays in and stretch the lead to 4-0 and just two pitches later, Sidnie English singled to make it 5-0.
The Lady Raiders kept things going with yet another RBI single, this time from Angelina Flanagan and Abby Hunt tacked on another run with an RBI single after her to go up 7-0. Three pitches later, Kailee Shikle singled into center field to make it 8-0 and Goodwin collected her second RBI single of the inning just two pitches later. With the bases loaded, Hays was hit by a pitch, bringing another run in and giving Good Hope a 10-0 going into the bottom of the third.
English kept her shutout going on the mound the rest of the way to seal the win. English held Albertville to just three hits in the game. Hays (one hit) and Tucker (one hit) each drove in two runs for the Lady Raiders and Goodwin finished 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Hunt (two hits), Flanangan (one hit), English (one hit), Shikle (two hits) and Swann (two hits) collected RBIs in the win as well.
Good Hope advanced to the next round against Wicksburg after the rout over Albertville and fell in a 3-2 nail-biter on the final pitch of the game.
Wicksburg took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but after five scoreless innings, the Lady Raiders tied things up when Bailey Swann came home to score on an error and Abby Hunt singled into center field to make it a 2-2 game. Good Hope picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth but back to back singles put a runner in scoring position for Wicksburg and an error allowed one of them to score, ending the Lady Raiders’ run at the Gulf Shores Classic.
Skylar Tucker went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss and Hunt (one RBI), Swann and Sidnie English each recorded hits as well. Good Hope finished 9th in the field of 57 at this week’s tournament and are now 19-4 on the season. They’ll be looking for win no. 20 when they host J.B. Pennington on April 2nd.
Other Wednesday scores:
West Point 5 – Vestavia Hills 4 (softball)
The Lady Warriors went up 3-0 in the top of the second, but Vestavia Hills answered four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Down 4-3 in the top of the third, Molly Pendley doubled into center field to bring in two runs and give West Point a 5-4 win.
Pendley finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and Makayla Brown (two hits) drove in a pair of runs as well.
Alexandria 5 – West Point 2 (softball)
The Lady Warriors tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the third, but Alexandria scored three in the top of the sixth to pull away and eliminate West Point from the Gulf Shores Classic field.
Molly Pendley went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Makayla Brown (one hit) drove in a run as well.
Cullman 8 – Sullivan East 5 (softball)
The Lady Bearcats got started early Wednesday morning with a matchup against Sullivan East and they pulled away late to win it after scoring five runs in the top of the sixth.
Cullman posted 13 hits in the win with RBIs scattered all over the lineup, led Faith Guest who went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Haley Shannon (one hit), Elizabeth Quick (one hit), Savannah Davis (one hit), Brandy Peoples, McKenna Kline (two hits) and Carlie Burnham (solo homerun) each drove in a run as well.
Pisgah 7 – Cullman 1 (softball)
Pisgah plated three runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the third to take an early 5-0 lead and Cullman couldn’t get the bats going enough to come back. Haley Shannon, Ashlen Heatherly, Alex Stansell and Faith Guest each recorded two hits for the Lady Bearcats in the loss.
Northview 16 – Fairview 1 (softball)
The Lady Aggies weren’t able to get the bats going in their Wednesday morning matchup with Northview and after falling behind 8-0 in the top of the first, Northview pulled away to win it 16-1.
Katie Ball recorded the only hit of the game for Fairview.
Gordonsville 11 – Fairview 1 (baseball)
The Aggies were held to just two hits in their 11-1 loss to Gordonsville on Wednesday, coming from Malcolm Parker and Dalton Payne.
Baldwin County 10 – West Point 0 (baseball)
Aubry Cleghorn recorded the only hit of the game for the Warriors in their 10-0 loss to Baldwin County Wednesday night.
