CULLMAN, Ala. – During last Tuesday’s special school tax renewal referendum, the district in the New Canaan precinct that lies within the corporate limits of the City of Arab turned in no votes from any of the 17 registered voters, resulting in the 3-mill Arab city tax renewal failing to pass.
Due to a complete lack of votes either for or against, Cullman County Probate Judge Tammy Brown investigated the incident and issued the following statement Monday afternoon:
“In regard to the March 19, 2019, Special Election, there are 1,014 registered voters for the New Canaan voting precinct. Only 17 registered voters reside within what is known as District 8. This means that 997 registered Cullman County voters have New Canaan as his or her voting location and do not reside within the corporate limits of the City of Arab.
“The New Canaan voting precinct had two ballot styles. One ballot was for Cullman County registered voters who do not reside within the corporate limits of the City of Arab, that number being 997. The other ballot was for Cullman County registered voters who do reside within the corporate limits of the City of Arab, that number being 17. The New Canaan voting precinct final election results indicated that 15 total votes were cast at this precinct. The 15 that voted were residents of Cullman County and did not reside within the corporate limits of the City of Arab. The 17 registered voters that are Cullman County residents residing within the corporate limits of the City of Arab chose not to vote in the Special Election.
“The district tax voted on within District 8 required a majority of participating voters to vote in the affirmative for the measure to pass. The District 8 voters failed to pass this measure with a majority vote as required by Amendment 3, Section 2, Constitution of Alabama of 1901.”
