WELTI, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Dance Alabama! troupe will perform for students at Welti Elementary School on Friday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. The performance is funded by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Welti is one of 18 schools in 12 counties benefiting from the council's statewide Alabama Touring Artist Program.
Dance Alabama! presents concerts that highlight work from University of Alabama student and faculty choreographers. In each performance, there is a mixture of group works, solos, duets and trios that engage students with fantastic partnering as well as a range of movement styles.
Performances show a diverse repertoire of dance works, including classical ballet, contemporary modern dance and hip-hop mixed with traditional jazz. Dance Alabama! performances occur throughout the academic year and are choreographed and designed by students and faculty.
Following the performances, dancers engage the student audience through dialog and questions, other times through call and response exercises, or through leading a brief warm-up and creating a short dance with the students.
“Alabama is indeed fortunate to have an abundance of outstanding performing artists,” said Joel Daves IV, council chairman. “Providing opportunities for students to enjoy and learn through the arts is a top priority for the council.”
The Alabama State Council on the Arts is the official state arts agency of Alabama. The staff of the council, directed by Elliot Knight, administers the grants programs and provides financial assistance in arts education and programming. The council receives its support through an annual appropriation from the Alabama Legislature and funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
Dance Alabama!
Dance Alabama! is an organization on the campus of The University of Alabama dedicated to bringing students together who share a love of dance. Under the guidance of the UA Department of Theatre & Dance Faculty, Dance Alabama! is an outlet for students to socialize, participate in various community outreach and service events, make connections, and both present and learn serious choreography through our performance opportunity every semester.
In both Fall and Spring semesters, Dance Alabama! holds open auditions for the Dance Alabama! performances. These performances are organized, choreographed, and designed entirely by students and include all genres of dance! Students who want to choreograph select the dancers they'd like to work with at auditions, hold rehearsals, and present their works for adjudication by the UA Dance Faculty.
