WSCC ATHLETICS ROUNDUP: Men’s basketball claims sole possession of 1st in ACCC North, WBB, softball and baseball updates

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Demarkus Lampley’s game-winning basket with three seconds remaining lifted Wallace State’s men to a thrilling 73-71 victory at Shelton State over the weekend, catapulting the Lions to sole possession of first place in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) North Division.

Lampley, a sophomore from Phenix City, finished with a game-high 32 points for the Lions, marking the sixth game he’s surpassed the 30-point plateau this season.

Wallace State, which has won seven consecutive games, had three other players finish with double figures. Jalen Hodges had 11 points and Max Clark and Zion Williams finished with 10 apiece.

The Lions led 35-50 at the break.

Wallace State (20-5, 8-1 ACCC) hosts Marion Military Institute today and travels to Lawson State on Thursday. The Lions welcome Southern Union to town on Sunday.

Women’s game

No. 12 Shelton State 90, No. 22 Wallace State 69

The 22nd-ranked Lady Lions (21-5, 5-2) had their six-game winning streak snapped by the 12th-ranked Lady Bucs over the weekend in a nationally-ranked showdown.

Miajah Bullock had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds for Wallace State. Freshman Imari Martin finished with 11 points for the Lady Lions, Kyra Williams had nine points off the bench and DeMaurea Moore pitched in with eight points and nine rebounds.

Shelton State led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and sustained a 42-23 advantage at halftime.

The Lady Lions travel to Lawson State on Thursday and host Southern Union on Sunday.

 Wallace State softball

Wallace State’s 13th-ranked softball team is off to an 8-2 start this season after registering four wins over the weekend in Dothan. The Lions defeated Northwest Florida State (10-9), Fayetteville Technical College (17-0), Walters State (4-3), and Tallahassee Community College (13-3). Their lone loss was to the College of Central Florida.

In the tournament opener, Wallace State rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and won in the seventh on a walk-off Northwest Florida State error after a Keeli Bobbitt single. Bobbitt finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored in that game, Addie Robinson had a homer and four RBIs and Katie Burden added a two-run homer. Wallace State pounded out 11 hits, including a pair from freshman Callie Ryan. Megan Schwieterman was the winning pitcher.

Freshman Lauren Quigley tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Fayetteville Technical College, recording four strikeouts and issuing one walk.

At the plate in that game, Morgan Weatherwax was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Hannah Ingram added a pair of hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Riley McWaters, Kaley Anthony and Jordan McMeans each drove in a pair of runs.

Lauren Keplinger was the winning pitcher against Walters State. Robinson and Kalynn Holcomb each had a pair of hits, including a double for the Lions. Holcomb finished with two RBIs and Robinson and Sydney McKissick each had one.

Against Tallahassee CC, Bobbitt finished 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Anthony was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Alysia Anderson had multiple hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Ryan and Robinson also had a pair of RBIs, while Chaney Phillips, McMeans, McWaters, McKissick and Sidney Edwards each drove in a run.

Mabry Norris moved to 3-0 on the mound with five effective innings.

Ryan, Holcomb and Phillips recorded RBIs against the College of Central Florida.

Wallace State baseball

Wallace State’s baseball team (2-3) traveled to Lurleen B. Wallace over the weekend, winning one game.

In a 12-1 victory, Jack Haney hit a homer and had four RBIs, Easton Kirk was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Kevin Dowdell finished with a single and two RBIs and Noah Fondren and Ty Hill each added run-scoring singles. Dalton Hall was the winning pitcher.

In an 11-8 loss, Kirk was 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, and Brady Sherrill, Hill and Collin Rogers each had multi-hit performances.

Haney homered in a 3-2 loss to wrap up the weekend series.

Wallace State baseball hosts Wabash Valley on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
