PREP BASKETBALL: West Point knocks off Vinemont 33-14 to advance to 9th grade boys’ title game

HANCEVILLE – We tipped off Wednesday’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament action with both ninth-grade semi-finals matchups, starting with (1) West Point taking on (4) Vinemont. The Warriors put together a dominant second half and pulled away to win it 33-14, earning them a spot in Saturday’s championship game.

Both teams were scoreless for most of the opening quarter until Gabe Friedrich knocked down two free throws to put the Eagles in front 2-0. West Point ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take the lead going into the second. The Warriors stretched their lead to 10-2 early in the second quarter, but Vinemont fought back to make it a 13-7 game at the half.

West Point came out swinging to start the second half and opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 25-7 lead midway through the period. The Warriors took a 29-7 lead into the fourth and pulled away to win it 33-14.

Sam Wheeler accounted for more than half of West Point’s scoring, putting up 18 points in the win. Friedrich and Colby Miller each scored seven for the Eagles.

The Warriors will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on the winner of (3) Good Hope and (2) Fairview for the ninth-grade boys’ championship.
