VINEMONT – Hanceville made the brief trip north to take on the Vinemont Eagles Tuesday night and the Bulldogs went home with a pair of varsity wins. The Lady Bulldogs put down the Lady Eagles 53-26 and the Bulldogs blew past Vinemont 80-41.
(11-8) Hanceville 53 – (5-18) Vinemont 26 (varsity girls)
The Lady Bulldogs took control of this one early, starting the game on a 7-0 run and maintaining an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hanceville stretched its lead out to 22-12 by halftime, thanks in large part to 16 first-half points from Kelly Pickett.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to take advantage of some Vinemont turnovers and turn them into easy buckets on the other end, building a 38-22 lead by the end of the third quarter. Hanceville started the final quarter the same way it started the first, with a 7-0 run that eliminated any chance of a comeback from the Lady Eagles. The Lady Bulldogs pulled away to win it 53-26.
Pickett led Hanceville with 25 points in the win, followed by Kierra Merriweather who finished with seven and Malia Howell and Mira Geiser who both added six. The Lady Bulldogs will look to keep things rolling in the right direction when they travel to face J.B. Pennington Thursday.
Bailey Preiss led Vinemont with nine points in the loss, followed closely by Madysen Hacker who posted eight. The Lady Eagles will try to bounce back with a win Thursday when they host Holly Pond.
(17-4) Hanceville 80 – (5-18) Vinemont 41 (varsity boys)
Just like the Lady Bulldogs before them, Hanceville’s boys' squad jumped out to an early lead as well, taking a commanding 21-5 lead into the second quarter. The Bulldogs were able to force turnovers throughout the game and turned them into fast-break points, making it tough for the Eagles to chip away at the lead. Raiden Morgan knocked down a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Hanceville a 41-19 lead at the break.
The third quarter might’ve been the most one-sided of the night for the Bulldogs, as they outscored Vinemont 31-15 in the period and built a 72-34 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. With the clock running, Hanceville held on to win in convincing fashion 80-41.
Several Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Morgan with 23. Fred Ellis finished just behind him with 19 points, followed by Tyson Bellmon with 14. Hanceville will look to stay hot when the Bulldogs travel to take on J.B. Pennington Thursday night.
