GOOD HOPE – Monday night was homecoming at Good Hope High School and the home-standing Raiders split a pair of varsity showdowns with the visiting Cleveland Panthers while also honoring Good Hope’s first-ever basketball team and crowning Madelyn Williams as the 2019 Homecoming Queen prior to the boys' game. The 1967-68 Raiders squad was recognized at halftime of the boys' game. The Lady Raiders fell just short of pulling off a dramatic comeback in their 54-50 loss to Cleveland and the Raiders knocked off the Panthers 68-55.
Cleveland 54 – (2-15) Good Hope 50 (varsity girls)
Good Hope kept the game close in the opening period and only trailed 13-6 after one but turnovers and bad shot selection led to some easy baskets for Cleveland and the Lady Raiders fell behind by double digits. The Lady Raiders kept fighting but went into the locker room down 30-18.
Good Hope made a push in the third period to get back in the game. Behind their bench, the Lady Raiders forced numerous Lady Panther turnovers and turned them into easy baskets, cutting a 35-20 score to 35-26. The Lady Raiders went into the final quarter trailing by just 10 at 40-30.
Cleveland started the final quarter strong, scoring the first nine points of the period to stretch its lead to 19 at 49-30, but the bench players for Good Hope launched a furious rally to get back in the game, forcing a plethora of Lady Panther turnovers and turning them into easy buckets. Led by Ivey Maddox and Heather Tetro, the Lady Raiders cut the 19-point deficit to just eight at 52-44 after a pair of Tetro free throws.
She later nailed back-to-back treys to make it a 52-50 contest. Cleveland made just one of four shots from the line to keep it a one-possession game. The Lady Raiders had a chance to tie the game up, but their 3-point attempt hit the side of the rim. The Lady Panthers later made another shot from the stripe and Good Hope's miraculous comeback fell just short in the end.
Heather Tetro finished the game with 18 points for Good Hope. Maddox added 13. Bailey Tetro ended up with seven points. Savanna Derrick added four points. Desire' Odachowski finished with three points. Abby Neighbors and Cayleigh Garmon each chipped in with two. Rudi Derrick added a point. The Lady Raiders will travel to Cold Springs on Thursday night.
(16-5) Good Hope 68 – Cleveland 55 (varsity boys)
Good Hope had a big first quarter, putting up 21 in the period, with Noah Fendley scored 10 of those points. Drew Maddox added a pair of treys and Cole Maddox scored five points to give the Raiders a 21-14 lead after one. Led by a trio of treys by Dawson Turner and balanced scoring from four other players in the second period, Good Hope stretched its lead to 40-29 at the half. The Raiders pulled away in the second half to take the game 68-55.
Drew Maddox finished the game with 15 points for the Raiders, followed by Fendley and Turner, who each added 14. Cole Maddox ended up with nine points. Tanner Malin added eight. Michael Lowe ended up with six points, and Matt Dixon chipped in with two. Good Hope will travel to Cold Springs on Thursday night.
