CULLMAN – The Cullman Police Department is reminding drivers that during certain times before and after school hours, left turns onto 13th Street Northeast from Second Avenue Northeast are prohibited. This restriction was put into place in November, when traffic flow patterns around Cullman High, Middle and Primary Schools were adjusted due to the closure of Eva Road between Forrest Avenue Northeast and Scenic Drive Northeast. The restriction could be in place for up to 10 months.
Officers with the CPD say that some motorists have continued to turn left onto 13th Street from Second Avenue, in spite of the restriction and a sign noting left turns are prohibited there from 7:15-8:30 a.m. and 2:15-3:30 p.m. on school days. They say that due to traffic at these times, a person turning left backs up traffic down Second Avenue, with often only one vehicle making it through the green light per cycle.
Citations could be issued to motorists who disregard the rule.
Below are the traffic flow patterns put into place in November:
Cullman High School and Cullman Primary School
- Traffic coming from the south will be unaffected and may proceed as usual.
- Drivers coming from Hwy. 157 who usually take Eva Rd. should proceed to Childhaven Rd.
- At the fork in Childhaven Rd. at the bottom of the hill past Mitchell Rd. NE and Orphans Home Rd. NE, proceed right onto Main Ave.
- From Main Ave., turn left onto 13th St. and proceed to schools.
- If you take the left fork onto 2nd Way NE (which turns into 2nd Ave. NE), left turns from that street onto 13th St. will not be permitted during drop-off or pick-up time. In order to turn left onto 13th St., you must take Main Ave.
Cullman Middle School
- Traffic coming from the south will be unaffected, and may proceed as usual
- Drivers coming from Hwy 157 who usually take Eva Rd. should proceed to Childhaven Rd.
- At the fork in Childhaven Rd. at the bottom of the hill past Mitchell Rd. NE and Orphans Home Rd. NE, proceed left onto 2nd Way, which becomes 2nd Ave. NE
- When you reach CMS, depending on your drop-off or pick-up point, continue on 2nd Ave. NE or turn left onto 9th St. NE over to 4th Ave. NE.
