HANCEVILLE – Holly Pond traveled to Lane Horton Gymnasium to take on Hanceville in a pair of huge county games Monday night. The girls' game saw the Lady Bulldogs hold on to win 45-41 while in the boys' matchup, Holly Pond won in an overtime thriller 91-86.
Holly Pond 91 – Hanceville 86 – OT (varsity boys)
The first quarter saw both teams go back and forth for the majority of the period, but the end belonged to Hanceville as the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to stretch their 20-18 lead to 26-19 by the end of the period.
It continued into the second period as both teams went back and forth. A 10-2 Bronco run cut the Bulldog lead to 38-34, but Zeke McDonald scored the final three points of the quarter to make it 41-34 going into the break.
Another 10-2 run by Holly Pond gave the Broncos a 44-43 lead in the third quarter and the chess match continued as both teams took their best shots. Holly Pond held a 55-52 lead going into the final period.
Holly Pond made it a 66-60 lead on an Isaac Ludwig trey, but the Bulldogs later cut it to two at 71-69 on baskets by McDonald and Raiden Morgan. Fred Ellis later tied the game at 71 on a pair of late free throws to send the game into overtime.
Holly Pond once held an 84-75 lead in the overtime period, but the Bulldogs continued to fight and made it an 89-86 game on a Morgan three. After that, Kyler Chaney sealed the 91-86 win at the free-throw line.
Chaney finished with 32 points, eight rebounds and a steal for Holly Pond, which is now 2-5 overall on the season. Tyler Boatright added 19 points, 11 rebounds, a block and a steal. Ludwig added 14 points, five rebounds and a steal. The Broncos will head home to take on Randolph on Tuesday night.
For Hanceville, Morgan led the way with 22 points, eight rebounds and a block. McDonald ended up with 17 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Ponchon added 12 points, as did Ellis, who also added seven rebounds of his own. The Bulldogs fall to 6-3 overall and will host Vinemont on Tuesday night.
Hanceville 45 – Holly Pond 41 (varsity girls)
Hanceville got off to a strong start by taking a 12-5 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 26-13 by halftime. The Lady Bulldogs held a 37-26 lead going into the final period, but Holly Pond made things very interesting. After Malia Howell made it 42-28 on a trey, the Lady Broncos went on a 10-0 run to make it a 42-38 game, but Kelly Pickett and Mira Gieser helped seal the 45-41 victory with a free throw and a layup.
Pickett finished with a team-high 16 points, five rebounds, six steals and three blocks for Hanceville, which is now 4-5 overall. Gieser added 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Tate Duke finished with 13 points for Holly Pond (2-4) while Heatherly added 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
