The Cullman City Council, seen on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018 (W.C. Mann for The Cullman Tribune)
CULLMAN – The Cullman City Council on Monday approved a bid from Powe General Contracting, LLC for the downtown streetscape Phase V project, in the amount of $359,036.25. The resolution document indicated that more than one bid was received but did not name other bidders.
The City received a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) Grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation earmarked for rehabilitation and construction of new handicapped accessible sidewalks in downtown Cullman along U.S. Highway 278 from First Avenue Southeast to Third Avenue Southeast, covering 80 percent of the project costs; the City will be responsible for the other 20 percent. The project will add to a number of sidewalks and street crossings in downtown Cullman that have recently been improved to comply with regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Chuck Chitwood, branch manager of CDG Engineers, which is consulting on the project, reported to the council that Powe’s bid came in at 20 percent below the City’s proposed budget for the project. He also noted that the project must still be approved by the Alabama Department of Transportation before construction can begin.
Chitwood further reported that CDG, Renta Urban Land Design, and the City are working on a similar proposal for improvements along First Avenue in the Warehouse District.

Turner was present and reported that 70 entries are currently scheduled to take part in the parade. The parade will run down First Avenue Southeast from a starting point near the Busy Bee Café through Depot Park, where the annual city tree-lighting ceremony will be followed by a Christmas concert with Nashville-based contemporary Christian band Anthem Lights.
