DECATUR – On Saturday, the powerful West Point Middle School Scholars’ Bowl team, which enjoyed an undefeated regular season this fall, took the top spot at the Decatur Middle School Invitational Tournament, defeating the current sixth-grade state champion in an early round and almost doubling the score of the current overall middle school state champion it faced in the final round.

Preliminary rounds

  • WPMS 285, Baldwin Arts and Academic Magnet School (defending sixth-grade champion) 180
  • WPMS 310, Cedar Ridge 60
  • WPMS 255, East Lawrence 40
  • WPMS 360, Arab 105

Playoffs

WPMS entered the playoff rounds as the top seed.

  • Quarterfinal: WPMS 365, East Elementary (Cullman) 40
  • Semifinal: WPMS 265, Baldwin Magnet 135

Championship match

  • WPMS 320, Discovery (current middle school state champion) 175

Coach and academic “proud papa” Lee Henry told The Tribune, “It's hard to find new ways to say this, but I'm just blown away at the talent for such a young team.  I was interested to see how they would handle a few things. I wanted to know how they would handle other really talented teams that would ‘slap back’ at them. They handled it like pros.  I wanted to know how they would handle a single-elimination playoff. They handled it like pros. I wanted to see how they would handle a long tournament.  They handled that like pros, too: we were there from 8 until around 4. I think we've got a legitimate shot at the sixth-grade state title. There's some time for our competition to catch us, and the target is definitely on our backs, but we're going to keep working hard and getting better, too.”
