CULLMAN – East Elementary School on Friday honored veterans at a special program. Veterans walked in groups by branch of military service, and the Cullman Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors. The sixth-grade chorus, led by Tim Clemmons, sang the national anthem.
The program featured guest speaker Cindy Pass, former EES faculty member, former active-duty Army nurse turned Army wife and mom. She shared her experiences overseas in Europe, while also encouraging students: “Duty, country and honor can be a calling to you.”
Guests were shown a video tribute to veterans, as well as a video compilation made by EES students and faculty. EES Student Council Vice-President Jaxon Stallings led a moment of silence before “Taps” was played to honor those who sacrificed their all.
Clemmons directed the whole EES student body in a rendition of “God Bless America” before Principal David Wiggins took the stage and thanked everyone for attending the program.
Wiggins gestured to the veterans, “Some worry about the state of our country… but I think we’re fine,” he said with a smile.
Wiggins then directed his attention to the students, “When you wake up on Monday, I want you to thank a veteran.”
In all, 121 veterans were recognized at East Elementary’s program.
