HANCEVILLE – The Hanceville Police Department is getting a trained narcotics dog, thanks to an anonymous donation of $25,000.
Police Chief Bob Long addressed the Hanceville City Council at its meeting Thursday evening, where Mayor Kenneth Nail agreed that the dog would be a great resource. Nail also made it clear he did not want a cross-trained K-9 trained to bite. Sgt. Joshua Howell will be the K-9’s handler and caretaker.
The anonymous donor has also offered to restock the city’s pond at Veterans Park with breeding fish as well as a fish food dispenser. The donor said he or she will supply the fish food for one year.
In new business, the council reappointed Nolan Bradford to head the planning commission and Steven Gravlee as the new municipal judge. Both were approved unanimously by the council. Bradford was in attendance and gave an update on downtown revitalization efforts.
The council also approved the transfer of property between the railroad tracks and Industrial Boulevard to the industrial development board. The area is estimated to be 6-7 acres. Other surplus items were approved to be listed on govdeals.com, including a piano and weight equipment from the civic center, eight red lights and an F150 pickup truck from public works.
With no old business to discuss, Nail, City Attorney Dan Willingham, Bradford and members of the council walked to the downtown stores that were open special late hours Thursday. Too You Nique and Just Repurposed have their stores and storefronts decorated for the holidays.
As part of the revitalization of downtown Hanceville, Nail explained, “Many of the upstairs of the buildings have been or are in the process of being converted into apartments. We want to attract more students to this area.”
