CULLMAN – Recently, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church held its inaugural “Harvest Walk,” where members of the church and their children walked three packed wagons of canned goods to Cullman’s Little Pantry. The church started a food drive in September and collected food for six to eight weeks.
The chair of St. Paul’s Parish Ed Committee, Amanda Lee, talked about what the church wanted to convey to the children with this new annual event.
“Our message for the children is to give back to the community,” said Lee.
The group prayed before walking to the pantry, which is located beside the Mary Carter Store (104 Fourth St. SE, Cullman), where the children stacked up and put the canned foods inside.
With this event, Lee said, she wanted to bring community awareness to Cullman’s Little Pantry.
Shared Lee, “I think community awareness is a great thing.”
Lee was pleased with the turnout, especially since this was the first time the event was held, and the children enjoyed it.
“I had fun,” said Rev. John Bussman’s son Gabriel; when asked why he did this, he said with a small smile, “So people can eat it.”
Lee’s daughter was also excited at the event, exclaiming, “The walk was fun!”
St. Paul’s hopes to do this event again next year, especially with this year’s nice turnout.
Said Lee, “We’re excited about this and we’re looking to grow this.”
Sandwiches were available after the walk for free will donations, with proceeds going to the church’s evangelism committee to help purchase Christmas presents for its Christmas Love project.
“Our goal is to get our children more involved in the community and teach them to give back to those in need,” said Lee.
