Republican Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick on Tuesday night won his second term. (Christy Perry for The Cullman Tribune)
CULLMAN – With close to 50 percent (49.49) voter turnout in Cullman County and 90 percent of straight-ticket voters choosing Republican, the 2018 local midterm election results yielded little surprise to political observers, with all races, both local and state, won decidedly by Republicans.
The only local candidate on the ballot who faced opposition was Republican Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick, who was challenged by Democrat and former Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree. Kilpatrick won the race with 79.28 percent of the vote to Murphree’s 20.66 percent.
All four state constitutional amendments, dealing with the 10 Commandments, abortion, the University of Alabama Board of Trustees and vacancies in the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate, passed.
Local Amendment No. 1, championed by Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry, passed with 87.49 percent of the vote. The amendment removes all jail food money from the personal control of any Cullman County Sheriff.
