The Good Hope Middle School robotics team in action Friday morning at Wallace State (W.C. Mann for The Cullman Tribune)
HANCEVILLE – On Friday morning, students from around this part of the state gathered at Wallace State Community College for the North Alabama BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics Tournament. Teams from Good Hope Middle School and Good Hope High School, Cullman Middle School and Fairview High School represented the Cullman area, and Good Hope Middle took second place overall, advancing to the state BEST tournament in December. First place went to Spain Park High School from Hoover.
As one of the goals is to expose students to the broad field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, the competition judges teams on far more than just the performance of their robots. Criteria include: teamwork, application of the engineering design process, school/community involvement, positive attitude/enthusiasm, diversity of participation, sportsmanship, creativity and ethics.
Teams and individual students can receive awards for point counts on the competition floor, most robust machine, most elegant machine, web page design, CAD design, oral presentations, educational displays, project notebooks, and even things like best T-shirt and most photogenic machine.
