Wallace State cross country teams heating up before postseason; men’s golf’s Matt Smith earns individual title

Victor Bravo and the Wallace State men’s cross country team finished third recently at the Sewanee Invitational.

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State cross country is heating up as the postseason approaches.

Both Wallace State teams are coming off one of their best performances since the program was reestablished last fall. The men and women each recently finished third overall at Sewanee Invitational.

For the men, freshman Eli Wilhite finished fourth overall in the 8K with a 27:46. It was the highest finish for a Wallace State runner this season.

Alex Leary finished 15th overall with a 28:47 and Victor Bravo was right on his heels with a 28:51, which was good for 16th place.

Hamza Abusammour (29:54), Drake Patton (30:51), Jacob Guthrie (31:24), Brennan Wink (32:05) and Lindsay Colter (33:38) rounded out the field for Wallace State.

For the women, Jacqueline Serrano finished 11th overall in the 6K with a 25:58.

Tatiana Padgett marked Wallace State’s next best finish with a 27:27, placing 22nd overall. Marlena Morales was a spot behind Padgett, earning a 27:31.

Makala Worrell (28:37), Alex McDonald (29:49), Alexandra Holt (30:44) and Miriam Smith rounded out the Wallace State field at Sewanee.

The Lions travel to Berry College in Rome, Ga., on Saturday to compete in the Berry College Cross Country Invitational before hosting the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) meet on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Men’s golf’s Matt Smith earns individual title

Wallace State freshman Matt Smith won his first collegiate individual medalist title this week at the NJCAA Division I National Preview Tournament in Viera, Fla.

Smith, a Clements graduate, outlasted Eastern Florida State’s Ben Ramos by two strokes, shooting a round-best 67 over the final 18 holes. Smith finished with a 4-under par 212 (73-72-67).

Smith has splashed upon the scene at Wallace State. Along with his individual title, Smith was an All-Tournament selection in the Wallace State Fall Invitational after placing third overall.

Wallace State finished seventh overall at the NJCAA Division I National Preview Tournament. Eastern Florida State won the tournament with a 5-over par 869. Odessa Community College was runner-up with a 17-over 881.

For Wallace State, Conner Bruce finished with a 16-over 232. Cody Maddox shot a 233, Anthony Lumpkin a 234 and Carter Goodwin a 235.

Wallace State’s next tournament is Oct. 22-23 in Scottsboro. Northeast Alabama is hosting the tournament.
