CULLMAN – Twenty-nine years. That’s how long 71-year-old Ken “Moose” Phillips has been driving a truck for Wal-Mart. In that time, Phillips has racked up a whopping 3 million miles on the road. Three million accident-free miles. On Thursday, he was recognized for his achievement.
Family members and co-workers waited anxiously for Phillips to arrive at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, his home base since 1994. He spent the first part of his career in Georgia. Phillips was happily surprised when he pulled into the truck entrance gate to be greeted by his General Transportation Manager, Eugene Reynolds, who was the first to congratulate him on his tremendous achievement.
Reynolds and another Wal-Mart employee then set up a “finish line” checkered ribbon for Phillips to drive through, marking his achievement.
Phillips is the first driver managed by Reynolds to receive the 3 Million Safe Miles award. In fact, Phillips is one of just four drivers out of 155 to achieve this mileage from Wal-Mart’s Cullman transportation office; that’s less than two percent of the Cullman drivers.
Phillips’ family from Georgia and Cullman came to a surprise party held just for him at the Wal-Mart Transportation Office, where cake and ice cream were served. Many of his coworkers stopped by to celebrate and congratulate him for his achievement.
Wal-Mart drivers who accomplish 3 Million Safe Miles get their own custom trucks assigned to them. The recipient gets to customize his or her truck, getting to pick the actual truck, color, seats and other parts. The driver’s name and number of safe miles are added to the door of the truck. When Phillips gets to customize his truck, the finished product will be delivered right to the Cullman location, where it will then be assigned only to him.
