COLONY – On Tuesday evening, the Colony Town Council had a light agenda, giving a first reading to a resolution to support the Alabama Bicentennial Commission in commemorating Alabama’s 200 years of statehood. Additionally, newest Councilman Melvin Hammond, who just joined the council and took charge of the town budget two weeks ago, told the council that work on the budget is back underway.
After that, the talk was of the good news variety.
Colony’s new Carpenter’s Cabinet food pantry will hold its first volunteer training session on the first Saturday in October, starting at 9 a.m. with breakfast prepared by councilman and former professional chef, James Ashford. Come to eat, stay to help feed! The pantry will hold an open house on Oct. 17 and will begin distribution of food on the first Wednesday in November. Applications for service will be available at Colony Town Hall beginning Oct. 1.
In conjunction with the $10,000 grant received from Morehouse College School of Medicine for a community garden, a webinar online training session was scheduled at the Educational Complex for Wednesday, Sept. 26 for anyone interested in learning more about how community gardening can improve community health.
Colony is selling a number items, from shirts and bags to handmade soaps and jewelry, to raise funds to support the pantry. See some of these items on Facebook at www.facebook.com/colony.townhall.
The Town is also selling shirts, modeled at the council meeting by Councilwoman Ethel Alexander and Councilman Ashford, to raise funds for programs at the Colony Senior Center.

The Colony Town Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. at Colony Town Hall, with work session at 5:30. The public is invited to attend.
