JASPER – The Addison Bulldogs (2A, Region 7) opened their season on the road Friday night against the Curry Yellow Jackets (4A, Region 5), holding on to snag the 20-12 win to start the season 1-0.

The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and barely allowed the Jackets to get their hands on the ball in the first quarter. Bulldogs running back Weston Smith, who rushed for 119 yards, scored a touchdown run with one minute and 23 seconds left in the quarter to put Addison on top. The Bulldogs then pulled off a successful onside kick and were able to keep possession.

In the second, Smith broke free for a huge 72-yard run for another touchdown, putting Addison up 14-0 after the PAT going into halftime.

Defense was strong on both sides for the third quarter, with both teams preventing the other from scoring. Then in the fourth, quarterback Zayne Guthrie ran in another touchdown, widening Addison’s lead to 20-0. Guthrie rushed for 71 yards in the game.

The Jackets finally answered back with a long touchdown pass to Colton Aaron with just four minutes and 26 seconds left in the game. After the touchdown, the Jackets performed a successful onside kick and that, combined with a penalty on the Bulldogs, put the Jackets within scoring distance. They capitalized on the opportunity with a touchdown run from Colton Burton, cutting the lead to 20-12.

Despite a strong effort in the final quarter, the Jackets were unable to gain the lead, and the Bulldogs held on to win, 20-12.

Bulldogs Head Coach David Smothers was happy about the win but said there's still more work to be done with his team.

"I'm tickled to death to be 1-0 and you’re next goal is 2-0; that's the way we look at things," said Smothers. "There were some good things, but we have a lot of work to do, just trying to get better. I'm proud to come down here and play and get us a first-game win, get that under our belt and go back to work."
