CULLMAN – The Cullman County Board of Education officially welcomed many new faces to the county schools at its July meeting, most of them being brand new and some being transferred to new positions.
Two of the transfers were Cyndi Roden, who will be the principal of Holly Pond Middle School starting this year, and Daniel Wakefield, who will be taking her place as principal of Hanceville Middle School (moving up from his place as assistant principal). The other staff appointments are as follows:
- Rebecca McSpadden, eighth-grade science teacher and possible robotics team leader at Good Hope Middle School
- April Burgess, counselor at Cold Springs High School
- Wesley Harden, assistant principal at Good Hope Primary and Elementary
- Kristin Smith, maternity leave substitute for fifth grade at Good Hope Elementary
- Roxi Lee, second-grade teacher at Hanceville Elementary
- Kim Lindsey, secondary curriculum coordinator for Cullman County Schools
- Leah Drock, district instructional coach
- Lexi Lynn, algebra I teacher at Hanceville High School
- Blake Calvert, ninth-grade world history and 10th/11th-grade U.S. history teacher and track and field coach at West Point High School
- Rachel Finley, teacher at Holly Pond Elementary
- Amber Robinson, teacher at Vinemont Elementary
- Kristin Whitlow, speech and language pathologist for all three Holly Pond Schools
- Janie Parson, 10th-grade English teacher at Good Hope High School
- Adriana Skutchan, ninth-grade science teacher at Good Hope High School
- Roy Johnson, assistant principal at Vinemont High School
- Keisha Harris, fifth-grade teacher at West Point Intermediate
Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette expressed his excitement over the new appointments, saying that he feels they will be part of the best year that Cullman County Schools has ever had. This exclamation followed his statement that this year's audit was the best audit report they've ever had, with almost no problems except for some teachers’ receipts not being turned in to the school bookkeepers on time.
Other points of business:
- Approved payment to Vinemont HS counselor Erika Bain for working before her hire date
- Approved payment to Lance Lay, James Brown, Scotty Cofer and Todd Johnson for their summer work on the Vinemont HS gyms
- Approved payment to George Redding for summer football field maintenance at Fairview HS
- Approved payment to Chuck Gambrill, Steve Means and Steve Wiley for up to five unused annual leave days
- Approved 2018-19 salary schedule with 2.5 percent raise as passed by state legislature
- Approved two maintenance department bids
- $10,000 to Alabama Construction Services for system-wide annual bleacher inspection and repair
- $1.39/gal to Thompson Gas for system-wide LP gas bid
- Approved request from the technology department to purchase up to 720 Chromebooks and computer carts to support Discover Science Techbooks in 3-12 classrooms that don't have daily access to devices, funded by technology sales tax up to $260,000

- 3.16.1 & 3.16.2 – Fundraising and Crowdfunding
- 6.1.2 – Homeless Students
- 6.3.1 – Student Meal Charge

- 7.14 – Parent/Family Involvement
Open houses for Cullman County Schools will be as follows:
Sixth grade: Aug. 5, from 2-4 p.m.
All other grades: Aug. 6, from 4-7 p.m.
The first day of school will be Wednesday, Aug. 8.
