WEST POINT – The West Point Town Council held further discussions on a handful of issues at its monthly meeting Monday night, starting with the food pantry project.

Mayor Kenneth Kilgo said the planned location for the food pantry is in front of Superior Custom Barns on County Road 1242. Kilgo recently spoke with Panama Baptist Church Pastor Greg Aldridge about stocking the pantry and according to Kilgo, Panama Baptist, along with other churches in the community, will participate in collecting food, along with West Point High School. Kilgo said there are still details to hash out as far as food storage and other things, but he wants to plan for a food drive soon and believes the pantry will provide a great service for the community.

“Lots of churches have programs and things like that, but there’s still a need there,” Kilgo said. “and the thing of it is, a lot of people who need help are ashamed to ask for it. So, this is kind of an inconspicuous way to get help.”

Kilgo and the council also briefly discussed the pre-conference for the long-awaited Alabama Highway 157 turn lane project. The meeting will be held Tuesday, June 19 in the town hall at 1 p.m. At the conference, T&K Construction will be presented all the contracts and a start date will be set for the project. Once work begins, T&K will have 120 days to complete it, barring any weather issues.

Before adjourning Monday night’s meeting, Kilgo mentioned to the council that the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce will be coming to the West Point Family Medical Practice for an official ribbon cutting on June 28 at 10:30 a.m. The practice is located at 4131 County Road 1141, Vinemont, AL 35179. Hot dogs and refreshments will be served to those in attendance.
