PREP BASEBALL: Fairview goes 1-1 in Gulf Coast Classic II; Cullman dominates on day one of Buccaneer Classic

GULF SHORES – Fairview looked to keep its momentum going from a win on Tuesday as the Aggies took on Rogers and Sheffield Wednesday in the Gulf Coast Classic II.

Rogers 13, Fairview 3

Rogers looked to get on the scoreboard first to start out the game. Austin Killen hit a one-out single to right field, then one out later, Devin Gooch hit a single of his own to left field; Chris Reding drew a walk to load the bases for Colton Chamblin, but Jarrett Miller was able to get out of the early jam by getting Chamblin to line out to second baseman Garret Dunn. 

Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until the top of the third inning when Daniel Mitchell put Rogers on the scoreboard with a lead-off home run. Gooch then hit a triple to center field and Chamblin drove him in one out later on an RBI single to center field to make it 2-0. The Pirates added to their lead in the fourth as Killen hit a two-run single; Gooch added a two-run triple and he, along with Reding, each stole home later in the inning and Fairview was looking at an 8-0 disadvantage.

Dunn reached on an infield single to lead off the Aggie fourth. Dayne Black then drew a walk and Dunn stole second and third; he scored on an infield RBI single by Truman Boyd to give the Aggies their first run of the game. Boyd stole home with two outs to cut the deficit to six at 8-2. Reding added a two-run single in the sixth for Rogers and Gooch stole home to make it an 11-2 game. Boyd added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth for Fairview, but that was the last run they scored in the game as Mitchell hit an RBI double and Gooch hit another RBI triple, his third of the game, to put the final score at 13-3.

Boyd had a hit and two RBIs for Fairview; he also scored a run. Dunn had a big day at the plate, collecting three hits and scoring two runs. Scoot Bennett added two hits and Thomas Mullican collected one of his own.

Fairview 5, Sheffield 4

Fairview looked to make it 1-1 on the day as the Aggies took on Sheffield in their second game of the day.

The Aggies cracked the scoreboard first in their opening at-bats. Dunn led off the inning with a single to center field, then he stole second and third. Riley Carroll drew a walk and Boyd hit an infield RBI single to give Fairview a 1-0 lead; after a Black single, Dalton Payne hit an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0. 

Bennett hit Sheffield's Anthony Cherry to lead off the third inning. Davis Boutwell reached on an infield single and Cherry scored on an RBI groundout by Chandler Moon as the Aggie lead got cut to 2-1. Both teams were held scoreless for the next three-and-a-half innings. Carroll hit an infield single to lead off the bottom of the sixth for Fairview; one out later, Black lined a single to left field. Payne gave the Aggies a 3-1 lead with an RBI single to center field. 

Bennett looked to finish things off in the top of the seventh. Boutwell hit a lead-off single for Sheffield and that ended his day. Malcolm Parker came in in relief of Bennett and he walked Hayden Berryhill after an eight-pitch at-bat. Moon tied the game at three with a two-run double to left field, then later on, Ricky Terry added an RBI single to give Sheffield a 4-3 lead. 

The Aggies looked to win the game in their final at-bats. Parker drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning, then Bennett reached on a bunt single. Dunn put down another bunt and he reached on an error by the pitcher, Terry, to load the bases with no outs. After Carroll struck out for the first out, Boyd hit a ground ball to third baseman Colton McKellips, who overthrew the first baseman, which allowed Parker and Bennett to score as the Aggies finished 1-1.

Boyd finished with a hit and three RBIs for Fairview. Payne added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Black and Carroll each collected two hits; Dunn and Bennett each added a hit. Dunn, Carroll, Boyd, Parker and Bennett each scored a run. Bennett went six innings and allowed six hits, two runs, one of them earned, walked two and struck out six. Parker allowed two hits and two runs, walked one and struck out one in his inning of work. The Aggies improve to 12-8 overall and will travel to Jackson on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Cullman dominates on day one of Buccaneer Classic

Cullman 6, Spanish Fort 2

HOOVER – A five-run third inning, plus a pitching gem by Will Morrison, led Cullman to a victory in game one of the Buccaneer Classic in Hoover.

Both teams had a combined three hits through the first two innings and Morrison struck four of the first six batters he faced. Cullman got its offense going in the top of the third inning. Hayden Henderson drew a lead-off walk, then Cooper Beck hit a single to left field; Weston Norton reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Grayson Taylor and he drew a walk to put Cullman on the scoreboard. After a strikeout, Morrison drew another bases-loaded walk to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead, then one out later, Dylon Wallace cleared the bases with a three-run double to increase the 'Cats' lead to 5-0. 

Spanish Fort scored its first run of the game on a Taylor error in the bottom of the fourth. Morrison added an RBI double in the top of the seventh for the Bearcats; an RBI groundout for Spanish Fort made it a 6-2 game in the bottom of the seventh, but Morrison got back-to-back groundouts to end the game.

Morrison gave up just three hits and two runs, one of them earned, walked just one and struck out nine; he added two hits and two RBIs as well. Wallace collected a hit and three RBIs. Taylor added a hit and an RBI. Weston Norton had three hits in the game. Beck and Henderson each collected a hit. Beck, Norton, Taylor, Seth Gable, Peyton Colvard and Henderson each scored a run.

Cullman 8, Houston 2

Some sloppy defense by Houston, plus another dominant pitching performance, this time by Michael Myers, led Cullman to a 2-0 record in day one of the Buccaneer Classic.

Cullman got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Morrison drew a lead-off walk, then a sacrifice bunt by Brennen Norton moved him over to second. Colvard reached on an error by the shortstop and that allowed Morrison to score to give the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead. A lead-off double by Brady Patterson got the Bearcats started in the top of the third inning; he went to third on an error by the center fielder. 

Beck reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Weston Norton lined a two-run single to left field to increase the Bearcat lead to 3-0. One out later, Morrison hit a single to left field, then later, Weston Norton stole home and Colvard added an RBI groundout to make it a 5-0 lead for Cullman.

Myers got in trouble in the bottom of the third as he allowed back-to-back doubles to Houston; a sacrifice fly and an RBI single cut the Bearcat lead to 5-2. But Cullman pulled away from Houston in the top of the sixth as back-to-back walks got them started. One out later, Patterson lined an RBI double to left field and Beck added an RBI groundout to widen the lead to 7-2. The Bearcats added their final run of the game on a bases-loaded walk by Henderson. In the final three innings, Myers struck out eight of his final nine batters. He allowed just five hits and two runs, walked two and struck out 16.

Weston Norton collected a hit and a pair of RBIs for Cullman. Patterson added two hits and two RBIs. Henderson and Colvard each added an RBI. Brennen Norton, Beck and Morrison each chipped in with a hit; Morrison drew three walks and scored three runs as well. The Bearcats had more walks (9) than hits (6) in the game. Beck, Weston Norton, Wallace, Henderson and Patterson each chipped in with a run scored. They improve to 12-7 overall and will take on Pell City on Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
