FAIRVIEW – Fairview and Hanceville faced off in Tuesday night softball action. After jumping out to a big lead, the Lady Aggies held off a late Lady Bulldog rally to take the game, 11-6.
Katie Ball led off the bottom of the first for the Lady Aggies with an infield single, then she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kennedy Johnson drew a walk, then Kennedy Chambers put Fairview on the scoreboard with an RBI single. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Deavan Fulmer, who got hit by the pitch to make it 2-0, then Kloie Watson hit a two-run single to right field to increase the Lady Aggies’ lead to 4-0. Fairview made it 5-0 in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Ball.
The bats stayed hot for Fairview in the bottom of the fourth. Asia Millwood and Rebekah DeBlanc drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, and Fulmer lined a three-run home run over the center field fence to make it 8-0. An RBI groundout by Kaitlyn Benson later made it 9-0.
Hanceville took advantage of two Fairview errors in the top of the fifth to get on the scoreboard. Back-to-back errors by Millwood plated two Lady Bulldog runs to make it a 9-2 game, then Hanceville made it 9-3 on a wild pitch. The Lady Aggies added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by DeBlanc and in the sixth on a Ball RBI double to go into the top of the seventh up, 11-3.
Hanceville started a rally to make things interesting in its final at-bats. Two home runs, a solo and a two-run shot, made it an 11-6 ball game, then Ball shut the door in the end.
Ball went 3-of-4 with two RBIs, a double and two singles; she went the whole game, allowing six hits, six runs, three of them earned, walked three and striking out eight. Fulmer added a hit, four RBIs and two runs scored. Johnson drew five out of the 11 Lady Aggie walks in the game. Chambers added a hit and an RBI, as did Benson. Watson chipped in with a hit and two RBIs, and DeBlanc added an RBI and two walks. The Lady Aggies got their first win of the season and will participate in the Cullman County Umpires Association Tournament and will take on Holly Pond and Cold Springs.
Five different Lady Bulldogs tallied at least one hit, but the late rally got started a little too late for them as they drop their first game of the season. They will also participate in the tournament and will take on Addison and Curry.
