HANCEVILLE – Day three of the Cullman County Basketball Tournament has ended and three new teams have fought their way into the next round of their brackets, starting with the junior varsity boys.

JV Boys Game 5: West Point (2) 50 – Fairview (3) 45 – Overtime

The first matchup of day three went to the wire and even gave fans some free basketball after the Fairview Aggies and the West Point Warriors finished regulation tied at 45 and had to settle things in overtime. It was a tight game from start to finish with the Warriors holding a small lead for most of the game until Aggies guard Dow Nichols laid one in to tie it up at 45 with 1:03 to play. Nichols finished with seven points and five rebounds in the tight loss. It was all Warriors once the overtime period began as Fairview was shutout in the extra time. The Warriors’ defense tightened up at the end of the game and got some big free throws late from guard Tyler White. White led the game with 18 points.

West Point will advance to play for the JV boys championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the first-seeded Holly Pond Broncos.

Varsity Girls Game 2: Cold Springs (3) 55 – Holly Pond (6) 31

Tuesday night’s varsity girls game was a much more one-sided contest, with the Lady Eagles hitting 10 3-pointers in a rout of Holly Pond. Six of those threes came from guard Camryn Crider, who hit 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 23 points in just three quarters. The Lady Eagles were strong on the defensive end as well, led by Elizabeth Hill who led the game with three steals to go along with 10 points and five rebounds. Holly Pond’s Elizabeth Miller led the way for the Lady Broncos finishing with seven points and five rebounds in the loss.

Cold Springs advances to take on second-seeded West Point Thursday night at 7:30 in the semi-final round.

Varsity Boys Game 2: Good Hope (3) 51 – Cold Springs (6) 34

The Eagles of Cold Springs came up short against the Raiders in Tuesday night’s final game that was played much closer than the score would indicate. The Eagles trailed Good Hope 21-19 at the half and put on a great effort on both ends of the floor. Cold Springs got a big lift from forward Hunter McClendon who led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the only double-double performance of the day. The Raiders went on an 18-9 run in the third quarter and took an 11-point lead into the fourth that the Eagles couldn’t overcome. Good Hope’s Isaac McDonald led the game with 20 points including three baskets from 3-point range and helped the Raiders pull away in the fourth quarter.

Good Hope will take on the winner of Wednesday night’s matchup between West Point and Vinemont on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Action picks back up at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Tom Drake Coliseum on the campus of Wallace State.
