The Hanceville Police Department has named the suspect in tonight's incident as Justin McCoy Booth, 24. He is 5'6", 135 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Mayor Kenneth Nail posted on social media a short while ago: "Our officer will be OK few broken bones, concussion. Overnight at UAB. Thanks for all the prayers."

HANCEVILLE – A Hanceville police officer was injured Monday night after being involved in a crash while in pursuit of an escaped suspect. The officer, who has not been identified, is being transported to UAB Hospital by ambulance.

According to Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail, the crash happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and Alabama Highway 91. "We hope and pray that he is OK," said Nail. "He is talking and answering questions."

Nail originally told The Tribune the suspect was being booked into jail and escaped out the back door of the complex. "The guy is wanted for burglary in another county," said Nail. However, Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long clarified: "He actually was released from our facility, but he had a hold with another agency. He's been in our jail for a couple days. He saw the judge this evening and he was being released, but he had a hold with another agency. In the process of moving inmates back and forth from the courtroom into the jail facility and so forth, he was able to basically just bolt and run out the door."

The suspect remains at large. Long said the suspect is not considered dangerous.

This is a developing story.
