CULLMAN – The first quarter of the hardwood match-up between St. Bernard and Cold Springs was a defensive battle. Neither team could get much going on the offensive side of the court because of great defensive play on both sides. A late steal and layup from St. Bernard gave the Saints a 10-7 advantage heading to the second.
In the second, the Eagles and Saints matched each other shot for shot, until the last minute of the quarter. St. Bernard went on a 6-2 run to end the half up 23-17.
The third was full of nonstop action with both Cold Springs and St. Bernard flying up and down the floor. The quarter was played almost even, with the Eagles able to shave two points off the Saints’ lead going to the fourth.
The Eagles continued to play hard and claw back but still found themselves behind in the waning minutes of the contest. The Eagles fouled, and the Saints hit just enough free throws to keep the game out of reach. St Bernard went on to take the game by a final of 44-36.
The Saints were led by Christian Peterson, with a game-high 20 points. Elijah Price got 12, followed by John Christian Rose with seven.
Hunter McClendon paced the Eagles at 13, with Adam Hill getting six and Matthew Peed, five.
Cold Springs 59, St. Bernard 23 (Girls)
It was a slow start for the Cold Springs Lady Eagles when they took to the floor against the Lady Saints of St. Bernard. However, Cold Springs found its spark midway through the frame and quadrupled the St. Bernard score to take a 16-4 lead after one.
Cold Springs continued to pour it on in the second quarter. Finding great success running the floor coupled with active hands on defense made for an impressive quarter and a 37-12 lead at the half.
The Lady Eagles were near unstoppable in the third, raining in threes and pushing their lead to 36, ensuring a hot clock in the fourth.
Final score: Cold Springs 59, St. Bernard 23
The Lady Eagles top three were Toni West with 12 points, Elizabeth Hill with 11 and Prisca McAnnally with nine.
Emma Tafazoli scored 10 for the Lady Saints. Claire Sanders got eight and Ashley Duke, five.
