CULLMAN – The Cullman County Basketball Tournament is right around the corner and will be back in Tom Drake Coliseum for the 25th year in a row. Coaches from all of the Cullman County schools gathered in the Cullman County School Board conference room Wednesday afternoon to discuss some things about the tournament, vote on All-County Teams and awards, and find out which teams they’ll be facing in round one.
After compiling all of the final conference records for each age group for each team, tournament coordinator Ronnie Barnes gave out the seeds for the 2018 tournament.
In the Varsity Girls bracket, the Lady Aggies of Fairview clinched the number one seed and will enjoy a bye in round one. The second-seeded West Point Lady Warriors will face the seventh-seeded Vinemont Lady Eagles on Monday, Jan. 22 at 6:15 p.m. Cold Springs finished with the third seed and will face the Holly Pond Lady Broncos on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6:15 p.m. In the final game of round one, fourth-seeded Hanceville will take on fifth seed Good Hope on Jan. 24 at 6:15 p.m.
In the Varsity Boys bracket, the Holly Pond Broncos won a tie-breaker over the West Point Warriors to claim the first seed and a bye in the opening round. The Warriors, as the second seed, will play against the seventh-seeded Vinemont Eagles in round one on Wednesday, Janu. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The third seed was also decided by a tie-breaker with the Good Hope Raiders edging out Fairview for the third spot and a matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 against the sixth-seeded Cold Springs Eagles. The fourth-seeded Fairview Aggies will take on the Hanceville Bulldogs in first game of the boy’s division on Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
In the Junior Varsity Girls division, the Cold Springs Lady Eagles secured the first seed after their performance in the regular season. Due to the number of teams entering the tournament this year, the Lady Aggies of Fairview will also receive a first-round bye as the two seed. Third-seeded West Point will face the sixth-ranked Holly Pond Lady Broncos on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. while the fourth-seeded Hanceville Lady Bulldogs will take on fifth-ranked Good Hope in the JV Girls opening game on Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
The Holly Pond Broncos clinched the first seed in the JV Boys division, and like their older counterparts, did it with a tie-breaker over West Point and will get a first-round bye. The Warriors will play against the seventh seed, Cold Springs, on Jan. 20 at 7:15 p.m. The third-ranked Fairview Aggies will face the sixth-seeded Good Hope Raiders on Jan. 20 at 4:45 p.m., and the fourth-ranked Hanceville Bulldogs will take on fifth-seeded Vinemont on Jan. 20 at 2:15 p.m. in the first game of the JV Boys division.
Odd numbers have forced some changes to the Ninth-Grade Boys bracket this year. This year’s top three seeds, Fairview, West Point and Vinemont, will receive a first-round bye. The fourth-seeded Holly Pond Broncos and the fifth-seeded Good Hope Raiders will tip off the tournament on Jan. 20 at 1 p.m., and the winner will see Fairview in round two. Vinemont and West Point will play each other in round two.
The regular season and holiday tournaments have been building up to this event for all of the county schools and coaches. The fun starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Tom Drake Coliseum on the campus of Wallace State.
