Wallace State guard Xavier Malcom (4) was named the ACCC Player of the Week on Monday after registering 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists in his first start of the season against Arkansas State-Mid-South.
HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s basketball teams geared up for Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) action with non-conference wins over the weekend.
Wallace State’s men collected an 83-69 victory over Arkansas State Mid-South behind four players finishing in double figures at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Dee’Quan Fleming led the Lions’ charge with 18 points off the bench. Mike Johnson also scored 18 points for Wallace State, Xavier Malcom finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Chris Rollins added 15 points and six rebounds.
Wallace State led 43-32 at the half and maintained control throughout.
Jerry Lwamba and Geordan Walker each added six points for Wallace State, which improved to 12-4.
Malcom was named the ACCC Player of the Week on Monday for his stellar effort vs. Arkansas State Mid-South. Malcom is a Hanceville High graduate.
Wallace State’s women’s team split a pair of games in the Shelton State New Year’s Classic.
The Lady Lions rallied in their tournament opener, edging Walters State, 56-55. Wallace State used a 33-19 surge in the second half to secure the victory.
Joy Sadler paced Wallace State with 14 points and six rebounds against Walters State. Tykeah Rogers scored nine points off the bench for the Lady Lions, Sydney Powell had eight points and six rebounds and Marquise Cobbs, Gabby Hill and Channing Gafford chipped in with five points apiece.
Wallace State dropped its tournament finale, losing 72-60 to Roane State.
Powell led the Lady Lions with 14 points and five assists. Karlie Hudson scored seven points for Wallace State, while Sadler, Cobbs, Rogers, Gabby Hill and Jada Golden added six points apiece.
Wallace State trailed 39-21 at the break.
Both Wallace State teams open conference play at Gadsden State on Tuesday. The home conference opener is Saturday vs. arch-rival Shelton State. The women tip the doubleheader off at 2 p.m.
