PREP BASKETBALL: Hanceville, Holly Pond each nab a pair of wins

HANCEVILLE – The Hanceville Bulldogs took on the Holly Pond Broncos in a series of four home games Thursday at Lane Horton Gymnasium.

Hanceville 47, Holly Pond 33 (JV Girls)

The JV girls took to the court first. The Lady Bulldogs won easily, 47-33, over the Broncos.

Hanceville took a 35-12 lead after one and never fell behind.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Victoria Stanley with 15 points and Malorie Morgan with 14. For Holly Pond, Tate Duke and Maddie Ham led with eight points each.

Holly Pond 57, Hanceville 30 (JV Boys)

The Broncos opened up a quick 6-0 lead before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard. At the end of one the Broncos led 16-8.

Holly Pond played impressive defense in the second, not allowing the Bulldogs to score, taking a commanding 34-8 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs fought to the end but came up short, 57-30.

The Broncos were led by Tucker Gambrill with 22, followed by Jordan Allbright with 14. Garrett Turner paced the Bulldogs with eight.

Hanceville 54, Holly Pond 34 (Varsity Girls)

It was hard-fought game by both teams. A back-and-forth first ended when Elizabeth Miller was fouled with one second remaining; she made both free throws, giving the Broncos the lead at 12-8.

The Bulldogs battled back to take the lead and went up 25-18 until Maddie Heatherly hit a 2-point basket as time expired in the half. Hanceville led 25-20 at the break.

At the end of three, it was Bulldogs 33-27. Hanceville wore down the Lady Broncos in the fourth, going on to claim the 54-34 victory.

Cassidy Campbell paced the Bulldogs with 20 points, followed by Kelley Pickett with 11, Malia Howell with 10 and Karmen Johnson with 8.

Miller led the Broncos with 11, Heatherly 8 and Presley Marks 6.

Holly Pond 74, Hanceville 62 (Varsity Boys)

Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs in the first quarter, and the Broncos capitalized on them, taking a 23-6 lead after one.

The Bulldogs were determined to stay in the game, cutting the lead to 24-12. But more turnovers hurt them, and the gap widened to 32-19. At the half, the score was 41-27.

The Bulldogs came out fighting in the third, cutting the lead to nine at 42-33, but the Broncos opened it back up to 14, 49-35, and took control of the game with a 19-point lead, 54-35. At the break it was 58-43, Holly Pond.

The Broncos held on to win, 74-62, led by Griffin Morris with 18, Kyler Chaney 15 and Jake Harris 12.

Brendan Flanigan led the Bulldogs with 19 points, followed by RJ Evans with 13 and Damion Johnson with 12.
