CULLMAN – A Trenton, Tennessee man was extradited over the weekend and brought to Cullman to face two murder charges. The arrest stems from an incident that occurred at the Days Inn off U.S. Highway 278 West in March of this year, when the body of Jeanie Kent, 47, also of Trenton, was found.

William Lynn Smith, 43, has been charged with murder and first-degree domestic violence (murder), according to Cullman Police Department Sgt. Scott Sanford, who is the lead on the case.

“On March 25 of this year, we were called to the Days Inn on Highway 278, where a deceased female was found,” said Sanford. “It was discovered that the room was actually rented in the name of William Smith.”

Sanford said the investigation has taken several months. He could not release particular details of the case, but said, “I believe they argued, and that resulted in her losing her life.”

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to have played a part in the incident.

Shared Sanford, “The suspect and the victim had been involved in a relationship for several, several years. It was on-again, off-again, and wasn’t easy-going.”

At the time Kent’s body was found, Smith had left the area and returned to Trenton.

Smith is being held in the Cullman County Detention Center on a $60,000 cash bond.

He is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
