BAILEYTON – On Monday evening, the Baileyton Town Council took time from a light meeting agenda for members to recount the Baileyton Seniors’ day trip to Montgomery, and to get ready for this week’s Sheriff’s Rodeo special needs mini rodeo on Thursday.
Mayor Johnny Dyar and others accompanied travelers from the Baileyton Senior Center to Montgomery Monday morning, visiting the Capitol building, governor’s mansion and Hank Williams’ gravesite, and dining at the RSA Tower. Their team of capital city guides included none other than State Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairiview. Group members even got to vote in the House chamber on a mock bill.
Several council members will be volunteering at the mini rodeo for special needs kids on Thursday before the Cullman County Sheriff's Office Jimmy Arrington Memorial Rodeo this Friday and Saturday. Dyar and his wife distributed T-shirts to members, to be worn at the event.
Dyar said of the special needs event, “If you go down there and you don’t have tears in your eyes when you leave, there’s something wrong. You better go and get somewhere by yourself, because it will honest to God make you cry. Those kids enjoy that; they enjoy that beyond and beyond.”
Council business
The mayor reported that lights for the town’s walking trail will cost $7,500, and that the request had been submitted to the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC). Councilmen Greg Griffin and Wendell Peterson had previously determined that the trail would require 50 lights, spaced 50 feet apart.
Dyar also reported that, according to Windell Calloway, a 10-acre parcel of land the Town is hoping to purchase for its new town hall should be available for sale in about two weeks. The FY 2018 Town budget includes $90,000 for the purchase of land and $262,112 for the construction of a new town hall.
Dyar also thanked Bobby Martin for his assistance in putting up the town’s Christmas lights, noting that, “We (did) it in about three hours. It normally takes us about three days!”
The council passed a motion to pay for the CDL physical of Jeff Creel, who drove the senior center bus to Montgomery. The clinic in Baileyton was unable to perform his physical, and he had to go to Cullman to have it done.
Dyar mentioned that rentals of town hall have led to parking problems for the adjoining medical clinic, which shares the same parking lot. From this time forward, Town Clerk Patricia Gilbert will give renters written notice of their responsibility to control parking.
Gilbert added that the Community Action Heating Assistance meeting will be held at town hall on Dec. 18.
The Baileyton Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
