HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s Computer Science program is offering a new Swift App Development class beginning with the spring 2018 semester.
Through a partnership with the Alabama Community College System and Apple, students can register for CIS 157 and learn to code and design fully functional apps, gaining critical job skills in software development and information technology. The curriculum is designed by Apple engineers and educators and uses Swift, one of the world’s most popular programming languages.
“This is a course we are very excited about offering to our students. I know I’ll have a lot of fun as well. It will teach students how to use program applications for devices such as the iPhone, iPad and all Apple products,” said Terry Ayers, Wallace State’s Computer Science Department Chair. “We already have a handful of students registered for the class, and I hope the interest continues to grow.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of applications developers is projected to grow 30 percent over roughly the next decade in order to meet demand, with median pay $100,080, nationally, in 2016. Similarly, the average wage reported for software application developers in Alabama during the same period was $92,680 to $101,450. The average hourly wage reported for the Birmingham-Hoover area, for example, was $39.52.

Wallace State’s Computer Science program offers associate’s degree options in the following concentrations: computer programming, Microsoft applications, networking technology, cyber security/computer forensic technology and web technology and short-term certificates in the following: computer programming, Microsoft advanced applications, computer technician and web technology.
Ayers said Wallace State’s Computer Science graduates fulfill a variety of jobs upon graduating from the program, ranging from local positions to those in bigger cities such as Huntsville and Birmingham. He noted that a number are working at hospital IT Departments.
