CULLMAN – The Cullman City School Board gathered Thursday evening for its monthly meeting, kicking things off with recognitions of the accomplishments made by students and employees within the school system.
The first group recognized was the Cullman High School FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), which recently won a gold medal in entrepreneurship during a Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference. Cullman’s FCCLA chapter is sponsored by Carin Rains and consists of students Sydney Ratliff, Campbell Sandlin and Kate Davis Heatherly.
Next up was the Cullman High School Broadcast Network, or Bearcat News Network. The CHS broadcast team has been working hard all year to deliver coverage of school events and was recognized this year by the National Federation of High Schools as an Elite School, the only school in Alabama to receive the rating. The team is sponsored by John Drake and its members include Isabella Allred, Avery Barlow, Nic Braswell, Kacy Burroughs, Coleman Callan, Jimnie Chau Le, Dawson Culver, Morgan Dingler, Samantha Hauk, Hayden Henderson, Caroline Hollingsworth, Ben Hollis, Holland Johnson, Eli Kilpatrick, Ben Monestero, Ninfa Moreno, Drew Morton, Alex Stansell, Dylan Warner and Jazmyn Woods.
Drake was excited to see his team of students recognized after the hard work they’ve put into their network.
“This is all thanks to the students; none of this would be possible without them,” Drake said. “They all work extremely hard and work well together and are getting better at what they love to do.”
The last recognition of the meeting was for the West Elementary School Child Nutrition Program led by CNP Manager Michelle Nix and CNP Assistant Director Terri Abbott. The West Elementary program was recently named an Alabama Best Practice Award Program. Abbott and Nix are still working toward new improvements to the program that is already receiving state recognition.

The next school board work session will be held in the central office’s conference room at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19, with a regular meeting to follow at 5 p.m.
