FALKVILLE –  It was a rough night to end the season for the Vinemont Eagles as they traveled to play the Falkville Blue Devils on Thursday night.  The Blue Devils cruised to a 47-7 victory thanks to a stout defense and balanced offense; they seemed to be clicking on all cylinders heading into the playoffs.

Vinemont’s opening offensive possession looked promising, but the Eagles ended up turning the ball over on downs, giving it to the Blue Devils deep in their own territory. After several big gains through the air, Aaron Dove found Noah Holmes for a 1-yard touchdown with 3:31 left in the opening quarter to put the Blue Devils up 7-0 after the PAT. Dustin Moore returned the ensuing kick-off all the way to the 25-yard line, setting the Eagles up in excellent position to tie the game, but the offense couldn’t capitalize, going three-and-out.

The Blue Devils were driving the ball to extend the lead, when Eagle Wyatt Thomason intercepted a pass, giving Vinemont the ball near midfield. The Eagles did capitalize this time, when, with 9:00 remaining in the first half, Jack Hill hooked up with Moore from 31 yards out for the TD. After the extra point, the game was tied at 7-all.

The score didn’t stay tied for long. On the third play of the next series, a 39-yard pass from Dove to Christian Angulo put the Blue Devils ahead 13-7 with 8:01 to go until halftime.

The Blue Devils held Vinemont to another three-and-out, giving the ball back to their red-hot offense. With 4:37 remaining in the half Dove called his own number, trucking up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Devils a 20-7 lead following the extra point. The Blue Devils’ offense got its hands on the ball one more time before halftime; as time expired, Dove scrambled and found Caleb Vinson for 28 yards and a touchdown. After the PAT, Falkville took a 27-7 lead into the locker room.

It didn’t take long for the Blue Devil offense to continue where they left off coming out of the break. On the first play from scrimmage Vinson went right up the middle for a 62-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 33-7. Falkville’s offense didn’t get much time to rest; on Vinemont’s very next play, Blue Devil Alex Fowler intercepted the Eagles. On fourth down, Vinson went 21 yards, bouncing off tackles on his way into the end zone with 8:09 left in the third quarter, giving the Blue Devils a commanding 39-7 lead.

Another Vinemont three-and-out forced by the Blue Devil defense and a lengthy drive by the offense resulted in a 2-yard touchdown by Fred Walls and a 47-7 Blue Devil lead after the 2-point conversion.

Final score: Falkville 47, Vinemont 7
