HANCEVILLE – It’s been almost two weeks since Hanceville High School’s Serah Hudson was crowned this year’s Cullman County Fair Queen. The Tribune caught up with the talented high school senior to find out a little more about her.
The ambitious Hudson already has a plan in mind for how she wants to continue her education after graduating from Hanceville in May. "I really want to go straight to UNA (University of North Alabama), but for money reasons I will probably attend Wallace State for two years and transfer to UNA," Hudson said.
Hudson says she plans on studying to become a social worker after college. Her upbringing played a big part in helping her decide what she wants to do professionally. During this year’s Fair Queen pageant, Hudson was asked about her special interest in foster care and adoption. Hudson herself was a foster child and adopted, so she has a heart for the work.
"I want to be a social worker; I kind of want to work with DHR (Department of Human Resources) maybe in like Birmingham or a bigger city. I just want to be like somebody was for me helping me find a home," Hudson said. "I want to be that person for other kids who are like myself. I know it's long hours and every time I tell someone I want to be a social worker people tell me not to do it and that it doesn’t pay (well), you don’t get paid for what you do, but since my parents have fostered for over 20 years we've had kids come in and out of our house so I think I would be really good at it."
Hudson has been competing in pageants since she was in first grade and says she can't think of anything that makes her nervous anymore; she just has a lot of fun competing.
"I just like getting dressed up and wearing a cute dress. My favorite part is the walking, I just love putting on my dress, walking on stage and strutting my stuff," Hudson joked. "Honestly, I wasn't really nervous for this one; for the school pageant I was nervous about my talent because I hadn't really done a talent (competition) before, but going into the Cullman County one I wasn't nervous because I had done it before."
This victory is especially satisfying for Hudson, since last year’s queen was also from Hanceville High (Mikah Hudson). She says she had many doubters going into the 2017 competition.
"It's crazy because people kept on saying the same school can't win two years in a row, dance never wins, I just heard it all the time and people kept on telling me that dance can't win (Hudson performed an acro/lyrical dance routine as her talent) and that a school can't win two in a row."
Hudson says she is looking forward to the school pageant in March to see who will follow her in representing Hanceville High School in next year's pageant. She says she feels good about Hanceville's chances at a third straight victory.
"I'm excited to watch them in March; we have really good girls in the junior class."
For being crowned 2017 Ms. Cullman County Fair Queen, Hudson received a $3,000 scholarship award from the Cullman County Fair Association and a diamond pendant from Doug Doggett Jewelers of Cullman.
