HOLLY POND – It was a thrilling day for the West Point Middle School volleyball team; the Lady Warriors did not drop a single set on their way to laying claim to the title of Cullman County Middle School Volleyball Champion.
The Lady Warriors faced Good Hope in the championship and it was a back-and-forth affair. The first set of the championship saw West Point get on the board first but Good Hope rattled off four straight points to take a 4-1 lead. West Point fired back with a kill from Sydney Smith and an ace from Kelena Carpenter. The action went back and forth for the majority of the set until West Point took over late, scoring seven straight points to make the score 20-15 in favor of the Lady Warriors. West Point held on to win with a kill from Kristine Shadix to end the first set 25-19.
West Point looked strong in the second set, and after trading points with Good Hope for the first eight points of the match, the Lady Warriors took over, going on an 8-2 run to open up a 14-6 lead. Good Hope fought back but never got closer than seven. West Point went on to win 25-17.
The Lady Warriors got to the championship game by defeating Vinemont 25-9, 25-12 in the opening round of the tournament and defeating Fairview 25-15, 25-17 in the semi-finals.
Good Hope earned its spot in the finals by defeating Hanceville 25-23, 25-22 in round number one and defeating Holly Pond 25-20, 25-21 in the semi-finals.
Fairview also won its opening-round match 25-15, 25-17 over Parkside. Holly Pond won its first-round match 25-13, 25-14 over Cold Springs.
