GAYLESVILLE – It was a long trip for the Meek Tigers, but a worthwhile one as they dismantled the Gaylesville Trojans, 52-6.
It didn't take Meek long to get on the board when, after forcing a Gaylesville three-and-out, John Mark Abercrombie fielded the Trojan punt at his own 39 and raced 61 yards down the sideline for the touchdown. The PAT was no good, but Meek took a 6-0 lead with 10:31 left to go in the first.
Meek forced another three-and-out and set up shop at the Trojans’ 47 for its next possession. Abercrombie got things going with a 16-yard pickup. The Tigers kept the ball on the ground the entirety of the drive, capping it with an 11-yard touchdown run from Stewart Waldrep. The PAT was missed and the Tigers held a 12-0 lead.
Gaylesville couldn't get anything going on its next possession and was forced into a three-and-out for the third consecutive drive.
Meek started its next drive at its own 30. Four plays later the Tigers were in the endzone again when Payton Key connected with Waldrep for a 46-yard touchdown strike. The PAT split the uprights to give Meek a 19-0 lead.
The Trojans’ next drive ended with Meek's Dennis Nalley falling on a fumble. The Tigers controlled the ball and clock for the remainder of the first quarter.
Meek found paydirt again less than a minute into the second quarter when Luke Sherer took it in from 9 yards out. The 2-point conversion succeeded, putting Meek up 27-0 with 11:10 left in the half.
Following a Gaylesville three-and-out, Meek took over at the Trojan 44. It took the Tigers just one play to cross the goal line when Waldrep took a reverse handoff 44 yards to the house. The PAT was missed but Meek led comfortably 33-0.
The Trojans ran just one play on their next possession. Caleb Aaron saw to that when he took the ball right out of the hands of the Gaylesville runner and took it the other way for a 48-yard scoop and score, putting Meek on top 40-0 and effectively putting the game away.
Gaylesville got its only score on the next possession when Colby Scott found Brayden Stordahl for a 5-yard touchdown, making the score 40-6 heading to the half.
Meek dominated the ball and the clock in the second half, scoring two more times on an 8-yard touchdown run by Abercrombie and a 23-yard touchdown run courtesy of Nelson Martin to cruise to a 52-6 victory.
