Wallace State volleyball splits 6 matches; cross country competes in 1st fall meet

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s volleyball team split six matches over the weekend at the Owens Community College Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, including beating two ranked squads.

Wallace State defeated St. Clair County Community College (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19), 16th-ranked Illinois Central College (25-16, 25-20, 26-24) and 19th-ranked Muskegon Community College (25-17, 25-17, 25-20).

Among the three losses, the Lions fell to Grand Rapids Community College and McHenry County College in five sets and to top-ranked Parkland College.

Sophomores Kaylee Maddox, Abby Borden and Emily Wilson paced the way for the Lions (3-3). Maddox racked up 87 kills and 57 digs over the six-match stretch, Wilson collected 95 digs and Borden finished with 211 assists and 58 digs.

Wallace State also received strong contributions from a handful of freshmen. Alex Wiggins finished with 38 digs and 35 kills over the weekend, Lexie Riggins had 45 kills, Maya Jones contributed 40 kills and Morgan Kyles collected 29 digs.

Wallace State opens conference play at Snead State on Wednesday. The Lions have won 42 consecutive conference matches under coach Randy Daniel, a stretch spanning three seasons.

Wallace State Cross Country

Wallace State’s cross-country teams opened their fall slate over the weekend, competing in the Jacksonville State Strut’s Invitational.

It marked the first cross country meet for Wallace State since 2008.

Victor Bravo had the best finish for Wallace State’s men with an overall time of 17:40.00. Wallace State’s Christopher Baker was two spots behind Bravo with an overall time of 17:47.9.

Dustin Howell (19:05.30), Jacob Guthrie (19:37.80), Brennan Wink (20:33.60), Morgan Smith (20:35.20) and Andrew Blair (21:58.70) rounded out the field for Wallace State.

For the women’s team, Marlena Morales finished with the best time, clocking in at 17:43.20.

Taylor Barkley finished with a 19:25.10, Sofia Ramos with a 20:04.70 and Miriam Smith with a 21:11.10 for the Lady Lions.

Wallace State travels to UAH for a meet on Saturday.
