VINEMONT – A head-on collision early Wednesday evening sent one man to an area hospital. Alabama State Troopers said that John Anthony Leonardi, 35, of Cullman was transported to UAB Hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries; he was set to be air lifted; however, due to inclement weather he was transported by ground. Leonardi suffered a leg injury which will require surgery, according to family members.
In an unfortunate twist to this story, today marked one year and one day since Leonardi survived a near-fatal rollover wreck on Highway 31 South when his blood sugar bottomed out. He was in UAB for an extended period of time, with two broken legs and a broken arm. He went through extensive rehabilitation and completed the 2017 EvaBank Midnight Run last Friday night. A family friend told The Tribune that Leonardi's family is asking for prayers and privacy at this time.
The wreck happened at 6:36 p.m. near the 333 mile marker on U.S. Highway 31 North, 2 miles north of Vinemont, according to Troopers, who said the two vehicles involved were a 2000 Chevrolet and a 2017 Chevrolet. No other injuries were reported.
The Vinemont-Providence Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Cullman EMS and Alabama State Troopers worked the scene.
