COLONY – The Colony Town Council is still trying to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Myra Twitty in early May. At its meeting Tuesday evening, confusion and lack of communication seemed to prevail. The vacancy was an item on the printed agenda, and candidate Melvin Hammond (see http://qrne.ws/colony) was present; but when Mayor Donnis Leeth announced the item, no one spoke up. As the meeting adjourned, Councilwoman Margaret Dimbo asked if the council was going to discuss the vacancy. As the meeting had adjourned at that point, no action could be taken.
In informal conversation among council members afterward, Dimbo, having previously looked up candidacy requirements, pointed out that candidates only needed to be registered to vote in the town, and have 30 days of residency. Those conditions would make Hammond a valid candidate for the vacant seat.
The good news of the night came from Councilman Curtis Johnson, who shared that attendance is holding strong at the summer feeding program with an average of around 20 participants per day. Additionally, volunteers from St. Andrews United Methodist Church will be coming down on Tuesdays to read to community children at the Educational Complex. A reading program led by various volunteers and featuring offerings by organizations like the McWane Center is already active on Wednesdays at the complex.
The Colony Town Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Colony Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
