CULLMAN – To make sure that everyone can do their shopping before the start of the school year, which for many will fall in early August, the State of Alabama has moved its back-to-school sales tax holiday from the first weekend in August to the third weekend in July.
The state will, from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 21 until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, forego its four percent sales tax on items commonly purchased for students. Cullman County will also set aside its 4.5 percent sales tax. Four municipalities in the county collect a .5 percent tax: Cullman, Hanceville, Fairview and Dodge City; all four have also agreed to waive their taxes.
Shopping anywhere in Cullman County should be tax-free on permitted items, including:
- Clothing $100 or less per article. This does not include clothing accessories or wearable safety gear or sports uniform items
- School supplies $50 or less per article
- Books $30 or less per item
- Computers, tablets, and printers $750 or less per item
