Cullman Center Manager Lisa Armstrong and property owner/developer Roy Drinkard
CULLMAN – On Wednesday morning the Cullman Chamber of Commerce, along with Mayor Woody Jacobs and developer Roy Drinkard, held a ribbon cutting to welcome statewide healthcare provider Champion Sports Medicine to its new franchise office in the Wilkommen Center at 1837 Patriot Way SW, near the southside Wal-Mart. The company, which has provided athletic trainers to local schools, opened its office here in January.
Before the ceremony, The Tribune sat down with Manager Lisa Armstrong to find out more.
“We’re an outpatient physical therapy clinic,” explained Armstrong. “We do sports medicine, but we also do orthopedic physical therapy; we treat patients who’ve had strokes or head injuries. I do pediatric physical therapy for dizziness or vertigo. We just offer any kind of outpatient physical therapy service.”
Since the clinic has been open for several months prior the official ribbon cutting, Armstrong had an opportunity to reflect on the center’s experience since January.
“We have a pretty solid referral source that’s sending us a lot of patients. We’re trying to get more referrals from a variety of doctors. We have four athletic trainers that cover the schools in the area, and so we get a lot of referrals from those athletes. Dr. David Dueland (of Cullman Regional Orthopedics and Sports Medicine) is sending us a lot of patients; he’s really helped us out to get started. We’re getting busier; we’ve progressively increased since January.”
Cullman Sports Medicine takes all brands of insurance, and Medicaid for patients under 18. Walk-ins can receive an initial evaluation on-site, but must have a physician’s referral for treatment.
