CULLMAN – A Hanceville man is behind bars tonight, arrested by Alabama State Troopers today, May 31, in connection with the Mother's Day hit and run crash that killed a Good Hope woman.
According to troopers, Larry Surrett, 58, was arrested and charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence and driving while revoked.
"He was arrested after a traffic homicide investigation that took place in the Good Hope Community on May 14," said a media release.
Surrett was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition when he allegedly struck and killed Helen Virginia Duke, 75, on Schwaiger Road in Good Hope some time before lunch on Mother's Day, May 14.
Authorities were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. after family members discovered Duke's body in a ditch beside the road near her mailbox.
Surrett was arrested at 4:45 p.m. today and placed in the Cullman County Detention Center.
