7 local athletes selected to take part in 2017 AHSAA All-Star events

MONTGOMERY – Seven outstanding prep athletes have been invited to participate in the 21st annual Alabama High School All-Star Sports Week.

The latest was added on Monday when St. Bernard's Andrew Sweeney was selected to participate in the inaugural AHSAA Cross Country run. Sweeney is one of a group of 10 athletes to represent the North against 10 outstanding runners from the South in the 3.5 mile run.

With Sweeney getting an invite, seven sports will have an athlete from The Tribune’s coverage area.

Sports Week consists of all-star games, along with a series of coaching clinics and awards ceremonies in the city of Montgomery in mid-July. All-Star Sports Week will take place July 17-21.

Here is the list of athletes and which days they will be participating.

BASEBALL: Will Morrison of Cullman will play for Team North. Morrison will be on the pitching staff for the North. The baseball series will be July 18 in a doubleheader at Riverwalk Stadium starting at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL: Kolby Holcombe of Holly Pond is on the North roster. The softball series will be July 18 at 6 p.m. at Lagoon Park.

SOCCER: Cullman's Miguel Tizapa will take his skills to the All-Star game, playing for the North. The soccer event will be July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.

CROSS COUNTRY: St. Bernard's Andrew Sweeney will run for the North in the inaugural cross country classic. The meet will be at 8 a.m. July 19 at Auburn University at Montgomery.

BASKETBALL: Christian Peterson of St. Bernard was invited to play for Team North in the summertime classic. The all-star game is July 19 at 8 p.m. at Alabama State University.

VOLLEYBALL: Addison's Abbie Chambless, the Class 1A Tournament MVP, will be a part of the North roster. The volleyball series is July 20 at Auburn University at Montgomery.

FOOTBALL: Cullman’s Tristin Skinner was selected to be the place kicker for the North in this year's gridiron classic. The All-Star game is July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Cramton Bowl.
