Suspected hit and run results in fatality on Schwaiger Road in Good Hope

State Trooper Curtis Summerville has released an official statement on today's fatal hit-and-run incident. See his statement in full below:

"A single-vehicle crash today, May 14, has left a pedestrian dead. Helen Virginia Duke, 75, of Cullman was killed when she was struck by an unknown vehicle which fled the scene.  Troopers were notified of the crash at 3:10 p.m. The crash occurred on Schwaiger Road inside the Good Hope city limits.  Troopers are searching for a possible Ford vehicle with damage to the passenger side rear view mirror. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, seen this vehicle, or have knowledge of the whereabouts of this vehicle is asked to contact the Decatur Trooper Post at 256-353-0631. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate."

ALEA has issued the following alert:

Schwaiger Road remains closed at this time.


GOOD HOPE – A suspected hit and run has resulted in the death of one person, confirmed Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick. The incident occurred near 478 Schwaiger Road in Good Hope.

Kilpatrick identified the victim as Helen Virginia Duke, 75.

The original call from Cullman County Dispatch went out at 2:51 p.m. Sunday as an elderly female found lying in a ditch. It is unknown when the incident happened.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating. Updates will be made as they are available.
