HANCEVILLE – On Saturday, May 13 and Saturday, May 20, the Hanceville Police Department (HPD) will host its sixth annual women’s firearm training event.

The sessions will begin at 8 a.m. at Hanceville City Hall.

“The day goes for four hours usually,” said Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long. “We have two hours of classroom education about firearms, and then two hours on the range. We’re typically done by noon.”

While the event has been free in year’s past, this year a $10 registration fee is required.

“We had kept it free, and just welcomed donations,” Long said. “But the event costs about $500 per day to put on.”

Each day’s registration is limited to 30 women, and there are no boyfriends or husbands allowed.

“We do not allow boyfriends or husbands to come with the women, especially on the range,” Long said. “The reason being is that the boyfriend or husband might think he knows more than us, or he might actually know more than us. Either way, they undermine the fact that we’re running the event. And the last thing we want are people who think they know more than the instructors.”

To register, women must be at least 18 years old. Each woman must also be able to provide her own firearm, 50 rounds of ammunition, a holster and belt, and eye and ear protection. The HPD says prescription glasses or sunglasses will be sufficient.

To register, call the Hanceville Police Department at 256-352-9811.
